Hot Stone Massage - Healing through touch
Hot Stone massage dates back to over 3000 years ago in India and China, and more recently North American Indians.
Hot Stones is the use of heated stones that are stroked over the body to create a deep, healing and relaxing treatment. The heat of the stones warms the skin, which allows for the absorption of moisturising and therapeutic oils, which simultaneously prepares the musculature of the body so the therapist can work into the deeper layers of muscles.
Benefits include: improved blood flow to surrounding tissues, increased local circulation, and greater ability to transport toxins and waste products from the area. The warm stones soften fascia faster and more deeply than traditional massage therapies, and increase lymph and digestive fluids and have sedating effects. The client will feel extremely relaxed and sleepy after the treatment, so that is why, we at Pure Serenity, advise our clients not to drive to the treatment, but ask a friend to collect them.
Cold stones can also be incorporated within a treatment but is not a treatment for everyone. Alternating between hot and cold will cause the blood vessels to alternate between dilation and constriction. The end result is a dramatic increase in circulation to that area.
Basalt stones are the most commonly used type of rock used in Hot Stone therapy. They are used for their ability to hold, and emanate a consistent and soothing heat for long periods of time.
During a treatment, many stones are used. There are various shapes and sizes that are relevant for certain areas. Placement stones for the back are usually large and flat so they do not roll off the back should the client move, they also hold the heat for longer. The therapist will use palm stones, toe stones, and facial stones in their hands to stroke over the client?s body and face, using oils. The stones used over the body are in direct contact with the client?s body and should never be static on the client. A thermometer is placed with the stones in the roasting pan, the therapist will use this to regularly check that the temperature is between 125 and 135 degrees, but the therapist should also base the temperature on the clients? comfort level.
Hot Stone is different to Swedish massage. In Hot Stone massage the therapist is unable to keep contact with the client throughout the treatment, as the hot stones need to be frequently swapped over with new stones to maintain temperature continuity.
