For most small businesses or those with a limited online presence, or those wanted to consider getting an online presence, the first thing to consider is a domain name.
A domain name should be secured as early as possible in the process of starting a business and ideally your domain name should be not too long (2-3words) and contain at least one of the prominent keywords (or searches someone would use when searching for your business).
Having spent over 15 years in the business, few businesses with expensive websites dont like to hear that they have chosen a poor domain for their business and especially in a competitive market place, this is an important consideration when searching for a product or company online.
So here are a summary of my recommendations for choosing a domain name;
3. Once you have decided on a name secure for the areas you wish to operate (e.g. .co.uk for uk, .ie for ireland and .com if you can) It may also be worth securing the other names including .net, .mobi if you have plans to expand online further and host your website under the most appropraite domain extension (e.g if you operate in the UK, then .co.uk, if you operate worldwide then .com)
